The Department for Work and Pensions is set to boost Universal Credit payments in April – thanks to an annual uplift. The DWP has confirmed new Universal Credit payment rates ahead of the fourth month of the year, when new rates kick in.

The DWP’s payment rates are changing for the 8.3 million people claiming Universal Credit. Under the shake-up from the Labour Party government, four million households will experience an annual income increase of approximately £725.

Single claimants over age 25 will see paymenys rise to £338 from £316, while those aged 25 and over get £424 – up from £400. Couples who are both under 25 will get a rise to £528.34 (from £497.55), the benefits department has added.

And the DWP says joint claimants, where one or both 25 or over, will be paid a new rate of £666.97 (from £628.10).

Child amounts are also changing, with the payment for first children born prior to 6 April 2017 rising to £351/88 (from £339).

First children (born on or after 6 April 2017) and second child and subsequent children (where an exception or transitional provision applies) will also rise, to £303.94 (from £292.81).

Limited Capability for Work amounts will be kept at £158.76 (no change) but Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity amounts will be cut to £217.26 (from £423.27).

Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity amount (pre-2026 claimant, severe conditions criteria claimant or claimant who is terminally ill) will stay at £429.80

Carer amounts will rise to £209.34 (from £201.68). The higher work allowance (no housing amount) – one or more dependent children or limited capability for work – will rise to £710.00 (from £684.00).

The lower work allowance – where one or more dependent children or limited capability for work – will rise to £427.00 (from £411.00).
