Legendary broadcaster Alan Brazil was absent from his famed breakfast show from the Cheltenham Festival – after only one day of racing action.

The 66-year-old hosted his adored show live from Prestbury Park on Tuesday, however, colleague Shebahn Aherne had to deliver an update that the former Scotland international would not be in attendance for the second day of the Cheltenham Festival.

Radio station talkSPORT have leaned into Brazil’s history of colourful excuses for missing his breakfast show with the running joke becoming ‘can Alan host all four of his assigned shows?’

Brazil regaled guests on the opening day, however, he was left in a coughing fit when former SFA chief Gordon Smith was his guest to discuss the fallout from Sunday’s pitch invasion between Rangers and Celtic.

But Aherne played down fears in a statement to start the show. She said: “Good morning, you are listening to talkSPORT Breakfast, my name’s Shebahn Aherne, not Alan Brazil, can you believe it? Day two, has he beaten his own record?”

Pundit Dean Saunders was adamant Brazil would be back before the end of the week.

Before Aherne added: “It’s not like he’s fallen off the wagon, or anything like that. he’s just absolutely banjaxed after one day of Cheltenham. It’s Cheltenham one, Alan Brazil nil. Unfortunately, he’s not going to be here, but he is absolutely fine. He is resting up and he will be back with you tomorrow.”

Listeners took to social media to react with some expressing concern due to how Brazil sounded on Tuesday.
