An ugly brawl between a group of men in Cheltenham’s on-course William Hill betting shop on Tuesday resulted in no arrests.

A number of social media accounts posted footage of the fight, during which a young man was punched in the face and left with a bloody nose.

A spokesperson for Cheltenham said: “Our focus is always on providing safe and enjoyable experiences for all our racegoers and we operate a strict zero-tolerance policy towards any form of antisocial behaviour.

“There was an isolated incident yesterday involving a small number of racegoers which was dealt with quickly by our security team on site. Police based at the racecourse attended but no arrests were made.

“Millions of people enjoy a day at the races every year while behaving perfectly safely and responsibly.”

The recent trend for falling Cheltenham Festival attendances was bucked on the meeting’s open day, with a crowd of 57,242 up on last year’s 55,498.

Champion Hurdle day was seen by 68,567 people as recently as 2022, although daily attendance is now capped at 66,000 in an attempt to deliver a better experience for racegoers.
