WASHINGTON, D.C. – Angelina Pelayo knocked down a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining in regulation to lift UNCW past Northeastern, 51-50, in the opening round of the 2026 Credit Union 1 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship on Wednesday.

The Seahawks (7-23) take on fifth-seeded Monmouth (19-10) at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. It was UNCW’s first postseason win since 2021.

Pelayo, a red-shirt freshman, also made a pair of free throws with 41 ticks on the clock to move UNCW to within 50-49. Following a shot clock violation with 11 seconds left by Northeastern, Pelayo was fouled with two seconds left, leading to her heroics.

Kylah Silver led three Seahawks in double-digit scoring with 14 points, and she added 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. She added a game and season-high tying five assists.

Also scoring in double figures were Mary Ferrito and Pelayo, each with 10 points.

Aiding in the win was UNCW converting 7-of-9 free throws in the fourth quarter and finishing 13-for-15 in the game.

UNCW trailed at the break, 29-24, but tied the game at 39-all through three quarters.

The game featured six ties and eight lead changes.
