Storms leave thousands without power in MS, possible snow ahead

Parts of Mississippi could see snow next week as another cold front is expected to move through.

As storms moved out of the state overnight, one person is dead and thousands in Mississippi were left without power Thursday morning, March 12, and another cold front is expected to drop temperatures below freezing next week and bring a chance of snow to parts of the state.
There was one fatality and three injuries reported in Lawrence County, according Gov. Tate Reeves. “Mississippi is praying for the family of the lost and for a speedy recovery of those injured,” Reeves wrote in a statement.
According to PowerOutage.com, 53,200 tracked customers in Mississippi were without power as of 3:45 a.m. Thursday. At 5:15 a.m., 48,195 remained without service. In Hinds County, 6,686 customers had outages along with 1,630 in Rankin County and 1,081 in Madison County.
Counties with the highest number of reported outages included:
- Hinds County: 6,686
- Pike County: 6,641
- Lincoln County: 4,465
- Amite County: 4,022
- Lawrence County: 2,539
- Jefferson Davis County: 2,294
The storm system also brought large amounts of rain. According to the National Weather Service, some areas in and near Jackson received a half inch to 1 1/2 inches of rain while some areas in South Mississippi received 2 inches-3 inches.
According to the National Weather Service, windy conditions are expected to continue through Thursday morning with sustained winds of 20-35 mph and gusts up to 45 mph in parts of the state. The agency warns winds may down trees and powerlines and make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles.
Freezing temperatures, possible snow forecast in MS
Temperatures are expected to be pleasant for the next several days with a predicted high of 61 on Thursday in Jackson and warming to the low 80s on Sunday, March 15. Hattiesburg should see similar temperatures with an expected high of 63 on Thursday and warming to about 83 degrees on Sunday.
However, another wave of cold air is expected to move in and bring below-freezing temperatures and a chance of snow to North Mississippi.
Oxford has a chance of showers Sunday night turning to possible snow showers early Monday morning with a low temperature of 34 degrees. On Tuesday morning, the expected low temperature is 27 degrees. Snow showers are also possible in Starkville on Monday morning with a low temperature of 28 on Tuesday morning.
There are slight chances of snow Monday morning in Southaven, Columbus, Corinth and other areas of North Mississippi along with below-freezing temperatures on Tuesday morning.
