‘Since my diagnosis, I haven’t had much alcohol’: The Princess of Wales reveals how her drinking habits have changed since her cancer treatment

Earlier in the day, the royal couple tried their hand at brewing at the Southwark Brewing Company. William ascended a ladder to add hops to the ‘kettle’, before Catherine climbed up to stir the mixture. During a pint pulling contest, owner Peter Jackson told the couple ‘You can come back on Saturday for a shift.’
This is not the first time that the Princess of Wales has opened up about her experiences with cancer. On her 44th birthday in January, she published a moving message alongside the fourth video in her ‘Mother Nature’ series, revealing that she was ‘deeply grateful’ she is to ‘discover what it means to be alive’ following her cancer treatment.
Also in January, she made a surprising outing to the Charing Cross Hospital in London, where she spoke with staff and patients about the experience of chemotherapy. One volunteer mentioned that chemotherapy patients can be at the Hospital ‘for hours’ while they receive treatment.

Catherine responded simply by saying ‘I know’, before turning to her husband, putting her hand on his arms and adding: ‘We know.’ In another conversation, Kate spoke to a volunteer about how chemotherapy can be ‘quite a daunting experience’, adding that ‘important things not in the job description, such as kindness and compassion’ really make a difference for those undergoing the treatment.
After announcing her cancer diagnosis in March – amid a maelstrom of social media rumourmongering and tabloid speculation as to her whereabouts – the Princess of Wales stepped out of the public eye to undergo chemotherapy. It would, she later said, an ‘incredibly tough’ nine months.

September brought the announcement that Kate had completed her chemotherapy, and the Autumn months saw her make a series of highly personal engagements. A visit to Southport in October to meet with the families of those who lost their lives in July’s knife attacks was followed by an emotional embrace for fellow cancer patient, the late teenage photographer, Liz Hatton. The pair bonded over their health journeys, and Liz’s mother said that the Prince and Princess had been bastions of compassion up until her death.
