No. 2 UConn vs. No. 11 Georgetown: What to know

NEW YORK (WFSB) – The second-seeded UConn men’s basketball team has a tough task ahead of it in Friday night’s Big East Tournament semifinal game.

The 28-4 Huskies take on 11th-seeded Georgetown at 8 p.m. at Madison Square Garden.

The game will be broadcast on FS1.

Hoyas tougher than they look

Georgetown defeated No. 3 Villanova 78-64 late Thursday night to advance to the semifinal. Julius Halaifonua led the way for the Hoyas with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hoyas are tougher than their 16-17 record indicates.

While UConn won both regular season meetings, the total margin of victory for the wins was only 6 points. The most recent game was a 79-75 win on Feb. 14 in Storrs. Before that, the Huskies escaped the Jan. 17 matchup 64-62 in Washington DC.

Huskies handle Musketeers in quarterfinal action

UConn routed No. 10 Xavier on Thursday night, 93-68, in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals.

The Huskies held the Musketeers to 37 percent shooting and outrebounded them 40-28.

Solo Ball was the high point man with 19. Tarris Reed Jr. chipped in with 17 while grabbing 14 rebounds.

What’s next

If the Huskies advance to Saturday night’s Big East Championship, they’ll face the winner of No. 1 St. John’s and No. 4 Seton Hall.

The Red Storm and the Pirates play at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
