22-year-old killed in Athens triple shooting

A man is in custody after a Saturday morning triple shooting in Athens killed a 22-year-old man and left two others in critical condition, according to police. 

What we know:

The Athens Police Department said officers responded to the 400 block of North Jackson around 2:20 a.m. When they arrived at the scene, they found three victims. 

One person was already deceased, and the other two were rushed to the hospital.

Officers said one of the victims taken to the hospital is not expected to live, and the other remains in critical condition.

Police identified the deceased victim as Clayton Adams, 22, of Hull. FOX 5’s Larry Spruill spoke with the family who gave us his picture.

The other two victims are in their early twenties, according to police. None of the three victims had connections to the University of Georgia.

Around 6 p.m., Athens police announced officers had arrested Mark Desousa, 22, of Jefferson for the shooting. He has been charged with malice murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery. 

What they’re saying:

Adams’ brother said he cannot believe his brother was shot and killed. 

“I am in shock, really, just can’t wrap my head around this right now,” he said. “He was my best friend, honestly. I just can’t believe someone would do tohis to him.” 

Adams’ family said one of the other victims was friends with Adams. The family said they’ve been told the other man was shot in the head. 

What we don’t know:

So far, authorities have not released any information regarding what led up to the shooting.
