MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A man has died after being shot by a Madison Police Department officer on Wednesday afternoon, the city’s chief of police confirmed.
Madison Police Department Chief John Patterson said officers were dispatched around 1 p.m. for the report of a person checking through parked vehicles. MPD officers found the man and tried to talk to him, Patterson said the man allegedly rode away on his bike through nearby backyards.
Officers found the man, who was in his 30s, at the intersection of Baldwin Street and Williamson Street around 1:30 p.m.

Chief Patterson said the man either fell off or was removed from his bike by officers.
A struggle happened with the man and officers, at which point Chief Patterson said the man allegedly pulled out a large, fixed-blade knife.
Patterson said an officer was injured by the knife while attempting to arrest him. Police tried to use a taser on the man, which did not work.

Chief Patterson said the officer who was injured by the knife was the same officer who then shot the man.
Video submitted by a WMTV viewer contains three gunshots that can be heard.
Officers performed lifesaving measures on the man before he was taken to a hospital, where he died. Officials said the man’s family has been notified. He was not named.
“I want to take a moment to honestly and sincerely offer my heartfelt sympathies to his family for this loss,” Patterson said.
Four Madison Police Department officers were involved, and only one officer fired their weapon.
The officer who fired his weapon is considered a veteran officer. Patterson did not name the officer who shot the man.
Madison Police Department officers do not have body worn cameras.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Justice is leading the investigation.
MPD said multiple streets are blocked off.
Multiple community members were gathering on Williamson Street near where the shooting happened.
The location of this deadly shooting is about a block and a half away from where police shot and killed Tony Robinson in March of 2015. The deadly shooting prompted a large community response, including walkouts and protests. The officer in that shooting was not charged for Robinson’s death.
