‘It’s a dream’: Gas station stop turns into $100,000 lottery win for Brunswick County man

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – A stop for gas led a Brunswick County man to win big in a new scratch-off game.

Angelo Collins stopped for gas at the Circle K on North Howe Street in Southport when he decided to buy a Cash Payday ticket. The $30 scratch-off led to him being the lucky winner of $100,000.

“It’s a dream,” Collins said. “It couldn’t have come at a better time too.”

He went to lottery headquarters on Thursday, March 12 to collect his prize and, after necessary state and federal tax deductions, received $72,018.

“It still hasn’t sunk in,” Collins said. “It’s just a blessing.”

He plans to use his winnings to pay bills and help his family.

The $100,000 Cash Payday game debuted in March with 80 top prizes of $100,000 each. Seventy-nine $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

“Education programs in Brunswick County received $6.3 million in support from lottery funds last year,” NC Education Lottery said.
