Jake Waterman gets one back for the Eagles

They’ll be begging for him to stay fit this year, they need everything they possibly can from the experienced blokes this season.

Good transition that time for the Eagles out of half-back, and Waterman read the flight of the kick in much better than Andrews. Nice set shot from 50.

QT: Suns open up 38-point lead over the Eagles

I mean, it is what it is really.

The Eagles, coming off one of the worst seasons of any team this century, is probably playing the most difficult game imaginable first up. The Suns are the flag favourites, it’s the longest road trip the Eagles will make all year, and the Suns have an Opening Round game of prep behind them already.

The Suns have been better than the Eagles at everything so far. They will win this game by a lot of points. The Eagles will be looking for little wins, of which there have been few so far, while the Suns will be hoping to rack up some percentage and avoid injury, which they have done so far.

Onto the second we go.

Jarrad Witts adds another one for the Suns

Another free kick to the Suns, Witts allegedly caught high in a ruck contest. The Eagles really don’t need those ones going against them.

Lovely set shot from Witts, who has been dominant so far.

Christian Petracca has three goals in the first quarter

The Eagles can’t get their hands on the footy now, and when they do any turnover is automatically leading to a score. Petracca is running Duggan ragged in the forward line while he has a break from the midfield.

Out to 32 points already.

Christian Petracca has his second

Suns go forward, Young brings it to ground, Petracca gets the crumb and snaps the goal. Easy.

Eagles had been holding their own for much of the quarter but it’s going the wrong way for them now.

Alex Davies dobs another on the run!

The umps have got them all guessing out there! Mac Andrew thought he had taken a hanger on the wing, but it wasn’t paid. Nobody heard that call so the game stopped until the Suns ran it forward, where Lombard got over the back of McCarthy and dished off to Davies.

So many weapons, the Suns! You can’t stop them all.

Noah Anderson puts one through for the Suns

Brilliant run there from Weller off the half-back line, cashing in on a turnover from Cole who was called to play on from a mark for some reason.

Weller did it all himself and laced out Anderson on the 50. His set shot was pure.

Milan Murdock kicks his first goal on West Coast debut!

What a moment for a mature age recruit who was training for a WAFL season and working as a sparky two weeks ago! That was a sensational chase and tackle on Mac Andrew, winning the holding the ball free then luring him in for a 50m penalty.

As the scrap carried on, Murdock made sure none of his teammates overturned it, then rushed to the square for his first goal in AFL footy. Brilliant moment for a young man who’s got here the hard way.

Christian Petracca dribbles through the second

The game stopped there for a second, as the kick to King was touched and he was well tackled after he marked it. Instead of calling holding the ball or balling it up, the ump did nothing until Petracca nicked it and goaled it.

Suns starting as we expected.

Ben King kicks the opening goal for the Suns

The Eagles had started relatively well, but their problem today is going to be defending transition. Feels like the Suns are going to be pinging the ball from half-back like that a lot.

Young left King to impact the marking contest but King got the second ball and snapped truly.

Ready to go on the Gold Coast

No time to catch your breath, we head to the glitter strip to watch the Suns play the Eagles. As I mentioned before, we’ve got the flag favourites at home to the spoon favourites to see out round one, which feels like a fixturing blunder to me.

The Suns will be out to make another statement after a big win over Geelong, and the Eagles will be here to show some signs and to try to be competitive.

Ball is in the air, here we go.

FT: The Dees have done it! They’ve beaten the Saints by 13 points

(Getty Images)

Welcome to the AFL, Stephen King! The new coach has breathed new life into this Melbourne team and watched as they produced a memorable MCG victory in his first game in charge.

The Demons were so unrelenting in their attack on the footy, but the way they ran the footy from the back half was something new and wonderful for the Demons. With Jacob van Rooyen up forward and Max Gawn in the ruck, the Dees had the big bodies who stood up when it counted.

The Saints are 0-2, which will sting given what was promised this season. The big names and new recruits did not influence the game like their Melbourne opponents today, and the same could be said of last week’s loss. It’s not a concern yet, but it’s a watch.

It’s all about Melbourne though! They might be must-watch TV in 2026 if that’s how they are going to play, and how much spirit they are going to carry with them.

Bayley Fritsch goals! The Demons are surely going to win!

They have not stopped running all day, and they have been brilliantly led by the incredible Max Gawn! Whenever they’ve needed some leadership, whenever they’ve needed a steady hand, Gawn has stepped up and made the difference for his side.

Fritsch gathered cleanly and snapped the goal which makes it 13 points again with 2:50 on the clock. Surely that’s enough for the Demons.

Max Hall boots his fourth! Saints won’t go away!

Another brilliant finish on the run from Hall, who has had a sensational game for the Saints today. That finish on the run from 50 makes it an seven-point game again with enough time.

4:30 to play. You can’t look away.

1h agoSun 15 Mar 2026 at 6:53am

Harry Sharp runs it into an open goal! The Demons!

They are going to be tough to catch from here! Jai Culley took a sensational contested mark on centre wing to set the Demons up, and then Sharp won a big one-on-one contest inside 50 and ran the ball in all the way.

Five minutes to play, it’s going to take a minor miracle for the Saints now. St Kilda miracle? Against Melbourne? Unheard of…

1h agoSun 15 Mar 2026 at 6:51am

Six minutes to play

The Saints are making a move, and Nas is back on the field after a spell on the bench, but it’s still an eight-point game as the final minutes arrive.

Max Gawn is playing an inspired last term. He might be the difference.

1h agoSun 15 Mar 2026 at 6:43am

Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera with a huge mark and goal!

Deja vu for Demons fans! Nas has taken a huge grab in the forward pocket, and having hardly seen the ball since half-time, that could be a moment to inspire his teammates.

The Saints need something to change the momentum here. It might be NWM or bust.

1h agoSun 15 Mar 2026 at 6:41am

Jacob van Rooyen has arrived! The Demons lead by three goals!

Another bomb from big Roo, and he’s got six goals at the MCG! Another set shot from outside 50 that never looked like missing has brought the house down.

They’re nearly home now, the Dees! What a victory this would be for Stephen King and Melbourne.

1h agoSun 15 Mar 2026 at 6:32am

Max Gawn gets the Demons off to a dream start in the last!

Big Maxy has pushed forward from the middle of the ground, well away from Tom De Koning who didn’t follow him down. He took an easy mark thanks to the height advantage and nailed his set shot from the pocket.

It’s a 10-point lead for the Demons. Saints need a response.
