Tufts Baseball Escapes Late Threat from Roger Williams To Earn 9-4 Win

MEDFORD, MA (March 19, 2026) — Jack Kamin  went 4-for-5 with a home run, while Michael O’Brien went 5.2 innings with two earned runs, allowing nine hits, as the Jumbos of Tufts University were able to defeat the Hawks of Roger Williams University, 9-4, at Sol Gittleman Park on Thursday.

The Jumbos had three extra base hits on the day, with Max Pavlik and Tyler Wong adding doubles, with Wong recording a pair of hits with an RBI. Mitchell Hwang moved to 2-0, pitching 2.1 innings without allowing a run to score.

The Hawks saw starter Matthew Donovan go 6.0 innings, striking out 4, throwing 110 pitches, allowing 6 hits and 3 earned runs, with 4 total coming in to score. Gianni Mercurio (Newbury, Mass.) picked up his first decision of the season, taking the loss, with 1.0 innings of work, allowing two to score. Noah Hester  and Casey DeLorenzo each had two hits, while Hester was the lone extra base hit. DeLorenzo and Elvin Espinal were the two Hawks with an RBI each.

In the top half of the second, with the home team batting first, Wong hit a double to left center field, Pavlik, standing on first, rounded third and headed home, but an error on the throw to the plate allowed Pavlik to score. Tufts tallied another run when a wild pitch brought home Malcolm Whitfield, who stood on third after reaching first after being hit, and a Kamin single.

Tufts led off the top of the fifth with Kamin’s home run over the left field wall, with Pavlik bringing in a run a few batters later with a sacrifice fly, as AJ Lysko advanced home, after standing on third following a walk and a Tate Bannish single.

Roger Williams was able to respond in the bottom half of the sixth, as runners stood on first and second, Espinal hit a ball into center field, bringing in Will Florio (San Jose, Calif.) from second base. The Hawks tacked another run on two batters later, as DeLorenzo hit a single to right, bringing in Griffin Ruffner to pinch run for Espinal.

With runners on second and third, after DeLorenzo stole second, Lynch hit a ball to third, with the throw going wild, allowing Nick Dimaso  and DeLorenzo to come home to score. Tufts answered with two runs in the top of the seventh, with Wong hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, and Jesse McCullough taking advantage of a mistake by the Hawks catcher behind the plate.

After Bannish hit a sac fly to center in the eighth to put the Jumbos up, 7-4, They added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach for the Hawks, as Jack McLaughlin pitched the ninth without a Hawk reaching base.

Tufts (8-1, 0-0 NESCAC) will host Russell Sage College on Friday, Mar. 20, at 3:00 pm. The Jumbos will host Suffolk on Saturday, Mar. 21, beginning at 12:00 pm for a doubleheader at Sol Gittleman Park.
