Climbing up from ‘The Pitt’: Shawn Hatosy in high profile sequel ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’

With a first-ever Emmy for his work on “The Pitt” that coincides with his “Southland” series revived on Netflix, Shawn Hatosy has reason to celebrate beyond Friday’s high-profile theatrical sequel “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.”
“I’m certainly enjoying a lot of different characters right now,” Hatosy, 50, reflected in a Zoom interview.
“I’d say that ‘Ready or Not’ may not have happened if it weren’t for ‘The Pitt.’ So, yeah, it’s an exciting time. Because I’m enjoying the work, being on Netflix. And finding a new audience for ‘Southland’ is great.”
Does he see “Southland,” which is about LA cops, as his big break?
“I had a pretty busy movie career right out of high school. A career happens in stages. I was in this world of teen movies — and that faded. Then came this golden age of basic cable TV – and that blew up. Then ‘Southland’ — and that went away.
“So you’re always guessing like, will middle age be the end of me?
“Certainly, after the actors’ strike, I was going through a pretty bleak time. And then John Wells, who I’ve made five shows with, and ‘The Pitt’ came along.
“When ‘The Pitt’ landed, it was to be just one scene in the first episode. I had no idea what it was going to turn into. But when that blew up it changed my life. Now, all of a sudden, there are many acting opportunities. So you just never know.”
As hunky, sometimes shirtless Dr. Jack Abbot, the overnight chief attending physician who moonlights as a SWAT doc, Hatosy won a Primetime Emmy as Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
As for “Ready 2” he hadn’t seen the original back in 2019 but was immediately intrigued once he read the 2 screenplay. “It’s just hilarious. Disturbing. So many things in one movie.”
He’s Titus Danforth, who is super close to his twin sister Ursula (Sarah Michelle Gellar). They’re members of a Satanic cult that operates on a global scale.
Which is why once again Samara Weaving’s Grace MacCaullay is on the run for her life, only now with her younger sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) in tow.
“Titus is somebody who comes from wealth and is in a family that has power. It’s not hard to decide who to model this character after –there are plenty of options out there right now” Hatosy observes.
“I think he struggles to find his identity. He’s not an independent guy. Decisions are made for him by his father (iconic horror director David Cronenberg) and his sister. We see what independence looks like for him. How he chases that power that’s within his reach. How he’ll do anything for it.”
