Metro Schools, Government Offices Closed Amid Winter Storm

Schools in the metro region are closed for the morning as Mother Nature takes a wintry swipe at parts of the island.

Government offices are closed for the morning, as are several other businesses. Metrobus and GoBus is off the road for the morning with an update at 10:00 a.m.

Road conditions are messy with travel not recommended in many areas.

Environment Canada Robert Grove says about 15 cm fell at St. John’s International overnight with another 10 cm left to come before things change to rain this afternoon.

The rain and drizzle will switch back to snow this evening which could make things messy again. Winds will pick up again which may compromise visibility over exposed areas.

Lesser amounts are expected for Clarenville and Central and there will be no switchover to rain as temperatures remain below the freezing mark.

That region is expecting about 15 to 30 cm once all is said and done.

Meanwhile, many Newfoundlanders ground down by what’s been a long and difficult winter, are eager to know when we can expect to see the first signs of spring.

Environment Canada meteorologist Jim Prime won’t be pegged down.

“I do get questioned ‘when is the spring coming?’ and you know, I never want to answer that this time of year, because things can fluctuate so much. We get one really warm day, and everyone says ‘oh! here comes the springtime!’ And then right after that we get snow again. So, nothing as major as this storm coming through in the short term, but we still have some time to wait before we get into the really warmer air in the middle of the spring.”
