Flood WATCH issued for parts of the region

As we head into this evening and overnight, a storm system approaching the east coast will send more moisture in our direction.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage later this evening and tonight, and this activity looks to continue through at least the first half of Monday.

Thanks to recent rainfall saturating the ground and elevating smaller creek and stream levels, it won’t take as much rain to produce flooding concerns. For that reason, the National Weather Service has placed the Lehigh Valley, Berks, Delaware Valley, and much of western New Jersey under a Flood WATCH in effect from 8pm Sunday evening to 11pm Monday evening.

Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms will likely track across the region over the next 24 hours and some of the storms may produce rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour. Overall, rainfall totals for several could be on the order of 1 to 2 inches with localized amounts of 3 to 5 inches not out of the question. Flash flooding may result if numbers like this are realized, particularly for urban and poor drainage areas as well as along smaller creeks and streams.

Much of the region is also highlighted under a marginal threat (level 1 out of 5) for severe weather over the next 24 hours. While the greatest concern with thunderstorms will be flooding, an isolated storm or two with damaging wind gusts cannot entirely be ruled out. It’s even possible there could be a brief weak spin-up of a tornado. That threat is very low but is non-zero and is mostly Sunday evening/night.
