In September, Lola Young announced she was taking a break from performing after collapsing onstage at the All Things Go festival in Queens. She made her return to the stage in February at the Grammys, where she performed “Messy” and won Best Pop Solo Performance for the song.
Now, months after her hiatus, the singer spoke about how she’s doing in an interview with the Times of London. Young declined to go into detail “for the sake of my privacy” but said her “recovery is an ongoing process.”
“I’m not the finished article, but I’m doing a hell of a lot better,” she said, then clarified she was in treatment related to substance abuse. “I mean drugs recovery, yes,” she said. “When you’re in recovery … that doesn’t necessarily need to mean drugs — but me specifically, yes.”
Young also said she’s been to rehab twice and that her hit album I’m Only F**king Myself was recorded after a five-week stay. Recalling her experience recording the album, she said, “There were a lot of things going on for me personally. I was going through a lot of mental health issues, a lot of battling with addiction.” During her hiatus after All Things Go, Young said she spent time in a “holistic facility” and currently attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
“I am now in a position where I can do things I couldn’t have done before,” Young said. “Doing it slower, more intentionally, but doing it in a way I feel is good for me.” Young also shared a message for others going through recovery. “This is an ongoing journey,” she said. “You have to be kind to yourself. You have to always remember that you are not alone. You are not ever, ever alone.”
