Kentucky basketball adds former NBA All-Star to coaching staff

Kentucky basketball is adding some star power to its coaching staff ahead of Year 3 under Mark Pope.

According to a report from On3, the Wildcats are set to hire Jackson State head coach and former NBA All-Star Mo Williams as an assistant. Williams, who was previously the head coach at Alabama State, has six seasons of Division I head coaching experience.

He’s 69-109 overall and is coming off a 12-21 season with the Tigers, though he had winning records in SWAC play all four years at JSU.

As a player, Williams earned SEC Freshman of the Year and Third Team All-SEC honors at Alabama before playing 15 years in the NBA from 2003-17. He was an All-Star in 2009 and won an NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.

Now, he joins a Wildcats staff that is looking to turn things around amid some frustration. Pope took the Wildcats to the Sweet 16 in Year 1, but they were bounced as a No. 7 seed in the Round of 32 this season. He’s just 46-26 so far at his alma mater and has finished 10-8 in SEC play in both of his first two seasons.
