Live updates: Trump to address nation in speech on Iran war

Trump acknowledged that Americans are concerned by what he called a “short-term increase” in gasoline prices, now that the average pump price has moved above $4 per gallon. But he gave short shrift to those worries, pivoting quickly to boasting about creating “the strongest economy in history.”

In the president’s telling, he transformed a “dead and crippled country” into the hottest market anywhere. He claimed the U.S. has “no inflation” although the Federal Reserve’s preferred metric shows prices rising at an annual rate of 3.1 percent — higher than the central bank’s 2 percent price stability target.

Trump also boasted about the stock market, which has flatlined since August.
