Detroit – The Tigers before the game announced that Justin Verlander will be placed on the 15-day IL with left hip inflammation. The move will be retroactive to April 1.
Verlander was scheduled to start the game Sunday night against the Cardinals. Right-hander Keider Montero is expected to be called up from Triple-A Toledo and make that start.
Manager AJ Hinch is expected to discuss the injury after the game Saturday.
Verlander made one start for the Tigers, in Detroit’s 9-6 loss at Arizona on Monday night. He gave up six hits and five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings, with one strikeout and two walks.
