Spoilers for The Drama below.
If you were hoodwinked by The Drama’s marketing campaign, you are not alone. Instead of promoting the movie around its big, provocative reveal, the people behind Kristoffer Borgli’s dark comedy opted instead to focus on the fact that it’s about a couple getting married. There was a pop-up wedding chapel in Las Vegas, the film’s stars did a relationship-hotline video, and Zendaya dressed in “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue” at various press events. How were you supposed to know that, 25 minutes into the movie, Zendaya’s character, Emma, would reveal that she once planned (and almost carried out) a school shooting?
If you thought this was a crazy and/or objectionable turn for the movie to make, you have a powerful ally: JT. “At first I was blushing like awww look at these two cute dorks,” the rapper wrote on Letterboxd. “I was ready for them to have a quirky fun relationship & to tickle my stomach with butterflies! (No I did not watch the trailer & yes I know what type of movies A24 put out) anywho it takes a questionable twist like 30 minutes in that gag me so bad that I get paranoid!” JT’s paranoia was not helped by the fact that there was apparently a man sitting by himself in her row “with a backpack & NO popcorn.” (Thankfully, he turned out to just be a man seeing a movie by himself.)
JT continued to unpack her thoughts about the big reveal on TikTok, where she said, “whoever produced that movie with Zendaya in it need to go to jail … call the police, call the police on they ass right motherfucking now.”
That being said, she seems to have come out a more positive impression than some viewers. At the end of her Letterboxd review, JT wrote, “The director need to be in an interrogation room! Overall a must see if you wanna have something to think about!” Not exactly a pan. In fact, based on the movie’s edgelord vibes, it’s probably Borgli’s ideal reaction. A24 should consider putting that quote on the poster.
