During a Monday press conference at the White House, a reporter asked President Donald Trump if he believes God supports the United States’ actions in its war on Iran.
Trump interrupted the reporter midway through her question.
“I do, because God is good,” Trump said. “And God wants to see people taken care of. God doesn’t like what’s happening. I don’t like what’s happening.”
“I’ve ended eight wars,” he added. “Nobody’s ever done it. The person who won the Nobel Prize came to me and said, ‘You deserve the Nobel Prize.’”
He went on to claim that the prime minister of Pakistan told him he had saved “from 30 to 50 million lives.”
“Let every round find its mark against the enemies of righteousness and our great nation,” Hegseth said. “Give them wisdom in every decision, endurance for the trial ahead, unbreakable unity and overwhelming violence of action against those who deserve no mercy.”
Pope Leo seemed to rebuke Hegseth’s “prayers” just days later.
“This is our God: Jesus, king of peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war,” the pontiff told worshippers during the Palm Sunday mass. “He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them. Saying even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: Your hands are full of blood.”
