Before he was arrested in 2023 and charged with the murders of seven women, Rex Heuermann was a New York architect and father.
His family home was in Massapequa Park, on New York’s Long Island, where the alleged serial killer lived with his wife and two adult children. He has worked in Manhattan since 1987 for a company he owns, RH Consultants and Associates.
Prosecutors have said he carried out the murders when his family was travelling outside the New York area.
Police told CBS that the family was “in the dark about his double life”, but the evidence points to the possibility that the killings were carried out in the family’s home.
The architect’s wife, Asa Ellerup, filed for divorce after he was charged with the murders.
Speaking to Fox News, Ellerup’s lawyer said that the investigation “is still a whirlwind” for Ellerup and the couple’s children.
“Her and her children’s lives have been completely turned upside down,” he said.
Those who knew Heuermann have been coming forward to describe their interactions with him.
One woman, 34-year-old Nicole Brass, told CBS she went on a date with him a few years ago in which he seemed “really excited” to discuss the Gilgo Beach murders.
“He was very detailed,” she said, “and it didn’t seem like somebody who was just a true crime fan.”
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison told a news conference in 2023: “Rex Heuermann is a demon that walks among us – a predator that ruined families.”
