Car recalls: Why they happen and what buyers should know
Why do car recalls happen? Here’s what to know if your car has an open recall.
General Motors is recalling over 270,000 vehicles due to a malfunction in the rearview camera that could raise a driver’s risk of a crash, according to a notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“A rearview image that does not display correctly reduces the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash,” according to the recall notice.
GM has identified an issue with the process used to assemble the camera housing, where the adhesive bond could weaken in some assemblies, allowing moisture to breach the housing and affect the camera, the recall notice stated.
Here’s what to know about the recall and the models included.
What GM vehicles are included in the recall?
The following vehicles are included in the recall:
- 2023 Chevrolet Malibu: Production dates from May 26, 2022, to Aug. 3, 2023
- 2024 Chevrolet Malibu: Production dates from March 22, 2023, to July 8, 2024
- 2025 Chevrolet Malibu: Production dates from April 16, 2024, to Dec. 20, 2024
In total, 271,770 vehicles are affected by the recall.
What drivers should do if they have a recalled GM vehicle
Owners who believe their cars might be involved in the recall can search for their vehicle identification numbers (VINs) on NHTSA.gov to see whether their vehicles are included, according to the NHTSA. Notification letters regarding the recall are also expected to be mailed out to owners on May 18.
Affected vehicles can be taken to GM dealers, where the rearview camera will be replaced free of charge.
