Seventh Georgia basketball player enters transfer portal

The Georgia Bulldogs basketball team is losing a seventh player to the NCAA transfer portal. Georgia forward Jaden Newell announced his plans to transfer the day the portal opened on Tuesday, April 7.
Newell is a former walk-on and is the older brother of former Georgia star Asa Newell, who was a first-round pick in the 2025 NBA draft and helped Georgia make the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Asa Newell was an elite recruit and having his brother on Georgia’s team helped the Bulldogs land him. The older Newell will graduate from Georgia with a degree in biology.
Jaden Newell’s decision to enter the transfer portal makes sense. He is getting his degree from Georgia, but has not earned much playing time. He likely wants a larger role at his transfer destination.
Newell played just 12 minutes across nine games during the 2025-2026 college basketball season. He scored two points in his limited time on the floor, but was a glue-guy for the Georgia team. Newell helped Georgia make back-to-back NCAA Tournaments during his final two seasons at Georgia. He grew from a walk-on player to a scholarship player.
During the 2025-2026 season, Georgia had 14 players played at least one minute. Half of those players now are expected to leave via the transfer portal. Two of the 14 players are out of eligibility (Justin Bailey and Justin Abson). Three players have announced their returns for next season while two players have not announced their plans.
Jaden Newell thanks Georgia basketball
“After much prayer and careful consideration, I have made the decision to continue that growth by entering the transfer portal,” Newell said in a thoughtful message via social media. “Thank you, Georgia. I will always bleed red and black. Go Dawgs!”
