Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in London, Ont., that could produce large hail on Tuesday morning.
The agency has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the London–Parkhill–Eastern Middlesex County region, with storms expected to develop early this morning. The main hazard, said meteorologist Yosef Mengesha, is high winds and hail up to the size of a toonie.
“So far we haven’t seen any reports, but that size of hail could damage property,” said Mengesha.
The storm is expected to start anytime after 6:30 a.m., he said. It could produce winds gusting up to 70 km/h, along with 5 to 10 millimetres of rain before tapering off in the afternoon.
Emergency Management Ontario is urging people to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
“When thunder roars, go indoors,” the agency said, warning that lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.
Tuesday will be cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of showers throughout the morning with a risk of a thunderstorm. Environment Canada is forecasting a daytime high of 23 C, feeling more like 28 with the humidex.
There will be a risk of thunderstorms late Tuesday evening and overnight, with about 5 to 10 mm of additional rain. Winds will become light with a low of 13 C.
It will be cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of showers on Wednesday, along with a risk of a thunderstorm and 5 to 10 mm of rain, moderate winds and a high of 18 C.
