‘Superman 2: Man of Tomorrow’ Taps Adria Arjona As Maxima

Following a round of auditions last week, Adria Arjona has landed the role of Maxima in the upcoming Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow from DC Studios. James Gunn is directing, producing and penned the script, with David Corenswet back as the Man of Steel.

DC Studios had no comment.

Arjona joins an ensemble that includes Nicholas Hoult playing Lex Luthor. Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathon Fillion as Guy Gardner and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. Aaron Pierre is also in the pic.

We’re told the character is Maxima, the warrior queen from the planet Almerac. Introduced in Action Comics #645 in 1990, she arrives on Earth in search of a suitable mate and quickly sets her sights on Superman. Created by writer Roger Stern and artist George Pérez, the character is depicted at various times in DC’s comics as an antagonist, ally and would-be love interest to Superman.

In live action, Maxima was depicted in the series Smallville and Supergirl by Charlotte Sullivan and Eve Torres Gracie, respectively. The character also has featured in Superman: The Animated Series and other animated fare, though she’s never been depicted in a live-action DC film.

This marks another high-profile role Arjona has landed that had a number of actresses chasing after she won the co-lead in The Thomas Crown Affair opposite Michael B. Jordan last year. That film bows in 2027.

She is repped by CAA and Goodman Genow. The Hollywood Reporter was first with the news of Arjona’s casting.
