Roosevelt High senior Delilah Woods’ ability to dominate the wings, get in behind defenders and fire crosses into the box gave the Mustangs a consistent threat amid a changing lineup all the way to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title this season.

The 2025-26 IE Varsity Girls Soccer Player of the Year, Woods focused Roosevelt’s attack and created space for teammates to shine.

“At the beginning of the season the coaches were telling me that they were going to kind of put me anywhere that I could find a spot; figure out where I could do the most damage,” Woods said. “I’m naturally a winger, and I naturally like to drive down the line but I think the further into the season it got the more confidence on the ball I got, and the more I was willing to sacrifice.”

Perhaps most significantly, Woods took the initiative to lead the Mustangs after Ireland Churchill’s early graduation in December.

“She’s kind of irreplaceable, but we all needed to step up, hold each other accountable for everything, and make sure guys were grinding and places that they didn’t want to grind at,” Woods said. “Obviously, she’s a huge player but I think we all realized that we just really needed to connect.”

Roosevelt (20-5-6 overall) won 13 of 15 matches after Jan. 1, losing once to Santiago in Big VIII League play and then in a shootout to Santa Margarita in the CIF State Southern California regional playoffs to end the season.

A four-year varsity starter, Woods set Roosevelt’s single-season record with 16 assists this season to go along with 14 goals. She finishes her career more than 75 wins and two CIF Southern Section Division 1 championships.

“She was the core of this unit and really a lot of the heart-and-soul of a group that had to deal with a lot over the last two years,” Tillehkooh said. “Her effort was incredible, each and every match, and she’s an all-time great here.”

Woods had the first goal in the playoff-opening win against Foothill, scored in back-to-back shootouts as Roosevelt won in the second round and the quarterfinals, respectively, before dealing two assists in the Division 1 semifinal against Sherman Oaks Notre Dame to get the Mustangs back to their second final in three seasons.

“At the end of the season the girls were so confident in the fact that I could do my job that it made me more confident in myself,” she said. “I knew they could do their job so I was like, ‘I’m not gonna work my butt off and do this and then you guys aren’t gonna get in the box. No, you’re gonna get in the box and you’re gonna score. Like, c’mon, we’re a team. We gotta do this together, whether it’s fun running or bad running, we gotta do it together.’”

One of a handful of players who played on Roosevelt’s 2024 title team, Woods said her high school experience has forged a stronger mentality as she heads to Boise State in the fall.

“I wouldn’t have gotten that girt and grind and the confidence if I didn’t play in high school,” she said. “Being here everyday really made me fall in love with the game.”

IE VARSITY COACH OF THE YEAR

At a certain point, the best coaches can stand back and let their players lead.

In his 11th season at Roosevelt High and with more than 150 wins on his resume, 2025-26 IE Varsity Girls Soccer Coach of the Year Andrew Tillehkooh says he did not have much choice during the second half of the season.

“The way they played down the stretch and into the playoffs, they took on their own personality,” said Tillehkooh, winner of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 coach of the year award.

“I just stood back at the time and watched them do their thing. They didn’t need a whole lot of anything from me, really,” he said.

Roosevelt allowed just three goals in five section playoff matches, including a 1-0 victory over Newport Harbor to win its second D1 title in three years.

“It’s a pleasure to lead a program that continues to the right things for these players,” Tillehkooh said. “The winning and the success have come after years and years of doing the right things.”
