USWNT Win Streak Snapped as Japan Shuts Down Trinity Rodman, American Offense in Upset

The United States Women’s National Team suffered a 1-0 loss to Japan in a friendly at Lumen Field on Tuesday night.

It was a particularly disappointing result for a USWNT squad that won 10 consecutive matches heading into the clash. This included a 2-1 victory over Japan on Saturday.

The United States, led by star forward Trinity Rodman, was unable to find the back of the net despite holding 66.5 percent of possession throughout the match.

It marked the first shutout loss for the USWNT since Feb. 2024.

The U.S. squad struggled with giveaways early, although it’s worth noting that rainy conditions may have impacted play.

Still, Japan opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after Maika Hamano cut back in the box to beat USA’s Lilly Reale before scoring.

USWNT forward Emma Sears attempted to respond just over 10 minutes later, but her shot missed wide of the post.

Japan was on the verge of extending its lead early in the second half, although U.S. goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce saved a short-range shot attempt from Manaka Matsukubo in the 64 minute.

Sophia Wilson put a shot on goal for the United States in the 71st minute, but it was easily saved by Japan’s Akane Okuma.

The USWNT wouldn’t get many more opportunities for the remainder of the match, as Japan ultimately held on for the win.

The United States finished with 12 shots, including five shots on goal. Head coach Emma Hayes’ squad also racked up three corner kicks.

With the USWNT’s win streak snapped, it’ll look to bounce back in its final friendly with Japan on Friday.
