Live announcement: George Foreman laid to rest in Iowa, fulfilling long-held wish

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Sioux City officials and family members announced that former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman has been laid to rest in Northwest Iowa.

Family members say Foreman never forgot Iowa following a trip to the region in 1988, saying he wanted to buried in the state. According to his family, Foreman often spoke of the area’s landscape, including the Loess Hills, and the sense of peace he felt during that visit.

Honoring his request, Foreman’s family traveled from Texas, and laid him to rest at Logan Park Cemetery in Sioux City on April 17, 2025. A place overlooking the Loess Hills and near Stone State Park.

“They said when they arrived, they immediately understood,” a family representative said. “It looked exactly like he described.”

One year later, on April 16, 2026, Foreman’s family returned to Sioux City to visit his monument and thank city officials who helped with his burial.

“Our father lived a life of purpose, faith and gratitude,” said the family in a statement. “To see him laid to rest in a place that brought him peace means everything to us.”

Foreman rose to international fame after winning a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and later becoming heavyweight champion in 1973.

After retiring in 1977 and becoming an ordained minister, Foreman returned to boxing in 1987. In 1994, at age 45, he became the oldest heavyweight boxing champion in history.

He later became an entrepreneur, known for the George Foreman Grill, and remained active as a minister, author and public speaker.

Foreman, who died in March 2025, is survived by his wife, his 10 children, grandchild, great grandchildren and extended family.

“Their story is a reminder of how one place can stay with someone for a lifetime,” stated Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott in a press release.
