‘One Night Only’ First Look: Will Gluck Rom-Com Teased At CinemaCon

Universal has offered a first look at One Night Only, its new romantic comedy starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner, from Anyone but You’s Will Gluck.
The film’s official logline had been kept under wraps. But at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Wednesday, we learned that what was rumored about the film is real — that it’s set in a world where premarital sex is allowed only one night a year and follows a pair who meet on that night.
Before unveiling a trailer, the studio played a sizzle reel of its past iconic rom-coms, noting, “Once upon a time, people fell in love on the big screen.”
Now, the sizzle observed: “Fewer romantic comedies than ever before. If we don’t act now, love will leave theaters forever.” Thankfully, this summer, there’s still “hope,” in their view, in the form of One Night Only.

The trailer opens with a young man (Turner) and woman (Barbaro) flirting in a pizzeria, talking about the best part of sex. Turner says it’s “the after, two people lying there sharing a secret.”
We cut to 10 hours earlier and hear Barbaro discussing how hard finding love is, particularly in a world with strangely specific rules when it comes to sexuality. Her name is Allie, and she wants to “find something real.”
Has she, in Turner’s Owen? We’ll find out.

Gluck directed One Night Only from his own script — a rewrite of an original from Travis Braun, which topped the 2024 Black List. The pic marks his return to the rom-com genre after titles such as Easy A, Friends with Benefits, and Anyone but You, the last of which became an outsized theatrical hit at $220M worldwide.
Also starring Molly Ringwald, LeVar Burton, Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, and Este Haim, the film is slated to open August 7. It’s produced by Gluck and Jacqueline Monetta via their Olive Bridge Entertainment.
