We’ve Seen Doctor Doom in Action for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Tonight at CinemaCon, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige was joined by his own Avengers roster of talent: Doomsday directors Anthony and Joe Russo; Robert Downey Jr.; and Steve Rogers himself, Chris Evans, to talk a little bit about the arrival of one of the most anticipated films of the year. But they did more than talk: they showed us a first look at a brand new trailer for the film, which is packed with dread, action, and, of course, Doctor Doom.
It starts on the sign for Xavier’s School. It’s on a rubble-filled floor. Professor X looks out the window and sees something massive coming towards him. It looks like he accepts his fate.
“Something’s coming,” Doctor Doom says. “Something we may not be able to deter.” We see an image of him kneeling and looking up to the sky. “Before this day is done, we’ll be faced with an unthinkable decision.”
We cut to Avengers Tower, which looks brand new with a large red and white A on the front. Thor is speaking. “I’ve fought with many warriors in my time,” he begins, surrounded by the Thunderbolts, Captain America, Bucky, Ant-Man, and more. “They were far stronger than all us put together. And they died.”
“They died facing enemies and threats that scared me far less than this one,” Thor continues. This is intercut with the Fantastic Four arriving at the tower. Shots of Shuri and several Wakandans, including M’Baku and Namor. We see them meet Thing and some others. There’s a brief shot of Thor arriving on a large field and Doom standing in the distance.
“Their sacrifice will have meant nothing if we do not stand together,” Thor’s narration adds. “Put aside your petty squabbles. Presume nothing, except this—If you return, you will return as brothers and sisters.”
We see Cyclops burst into a room, blasting from his visor. Shang-Chi and Gambit battle somewhere. We see Mystique turn into Yelena as they battle. Ant-Man says goodbye to his daughter, Cassie. Namor flies around screaming. Sue Storm screams as a large wave rises above her.
Finally, Thor jumps and brings Stormbreaker down on Doom, who stops it easily. “But mark my words: we’re going to need a miracle,” he says. “Hey pal,” a sudden familiar-sounding voice off screen says.
“It’s not possible,” a shocked Thor says. He holds Mjölnir out, and it flies into the hand of the other person. It’s Steve Rogers.
There’s no word on when the rest of the world is going to get to see this trailer, but when they do, expect the Internet to go wild. Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters December 18.
