TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs’ search for new front office leadership has led them back to a familiar face: Mats Sundin.

The organization’s all-time leading scorer is in Toronto to sit down with Leafs ownership about a potential role in the new setup, according to multiple league sources. It’s expected to be an open-ended conversation with no specific defined role at this stage.

Sundin has kept a relatively low profile since retiring from the NHL in 2008-09, returning to Sweden and raising his three children. He’s been around the Leafs more in recent years, though, especially after the club played Global Series Games in Stockholm in November of 2023 and involved Sundin in everything it did there.

“Toronto’s management and coaches have taken me in, and it has been incredibly nice,” Sundin said during that visit. “Toronto has meant so incredibly much to my career; I was there for 13 years and the captain. Toronto is my second home; we live in Stockholm, but when I come there, it’s like coming home.”

Sundin has since been a guest at training camp and played a major role in the organization’s efforts to honor Börje Salming, taking part in an emotional on-ice ceremony at Scotiabank Arena before Salming’s death from ALS and helping organize a charity game with Leafs alumni in Gavle, Sweden, to honor his memory and raise funds for charity afterward.

The Leafs are in the process of reconstructing the front office following the firing of general manager Brad Treliving on March 30. They haven’t had a president of hockey operations since firing Brendan Shanahan in May of 2025 and are open to filling that role as well.

“When he comes in a room, you sit back: ‘Oh boy, here he is,’” one league source said of Sundin. “I don’t know what his role would be, but he could do anything. He’s that smart.”
