‘I’m heartbroken’ – Xavi Simons out for World Cup with ACL injury

FIFA releases more tickets to 2026 World Cup games

FIFA released a new batch of tickets to all 104 games of the 2026 World Cup on April 22nd.

Netherlands midfielder Xavi Simons has announced he will miss the World Cup with a knee injury that he suffered on Saturday with Tottenham.

Simons went down with an injury in the second half of Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Wolves, requiring a stretcher to exit the field.

Per multiple reports, Simons suffered an injury to his right ACL.

The 23-year-old revealed he would miss the World Cup on Sunday in a post on Instagram.

“They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way. My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it. Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense,” he wrote.

“All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me … along with the World Cup.

“Representing my country this summer … just gone. It’ll take time to find peace with this, but I’ll continue to be the best teammate I can be. I have no doubt that together we’ll win this fight.

“I’ll walk this path now, guided by faith, with strength, with resilience, with belief, as I count down the days to getting back out there. Be patient with me. COYS.”

Simons was set to play a significant role for Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad at the World Cup this summer.

He has suited up for the Oranje more than two dozen times after making his debut in 2022.

Simons came into the Netherlands’ March friendly against Norway as a substitute and played 21 minutes, then started the second March game against Ecuador, going 71 minutes.

The injury is also a major blow for Tottenham’s hopes of Premier League survival.

After Spurs’ win over Wolves, they are two points away from safety with four games remaining.
