Less than two weeks after LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil said LIV’s season will continue “exactly as planned, uninterrupted and at full throttle,” the LIV Golf Louisiana event in June will be postponed.

Secretary of Louisiana Economic Development Susan Bourgeois publicly reached out to O’Neil in the days after the news broke that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund was preparing to pull funding from the four-year-old league. Bourgeois and O’Neil spoke on Friday, according to a source with knowledge of the conversation, and agreed to postpone the June 25 event due to LIV Golf’s changing business model.

The postponement is expected to be announced Tuesday, and the two sides hope to return to the table to potentially plan a “re-envisioned event in the fall.” LIV Golf does not currently have a schedule after its team championship in August.

LIV Golf did not respond to a request for comment.

Louisiana was slated to spend approximately $7 million of state money to bring LIV to New Orleans’ Bayou Oaks in City Park, with roughly $2 million toward course improvements and another $5 million for hosting fees. As of last week, only north of $3 million had been spent, including the $2 million on course improvements.

The state has clawback provisions in the deal, and according to the source, the two parties agreed that LIV will return the $1.2 million already received while treating the $2 million spent on Bayou Oaks as an acceptable improvement to a state asset.

What remains unclear is what this means for LIV. O’Neil and company are in the process of trying to raise funds to support the league after PIF funding potentially ends this year, according to LIV Golf sources. That plan involves optimism in selling equity in its 13 LIV Golf teams and other outside investments. O’Neil also told the in-house broadcast team the league is looking at new ways to change and improve the league, including partnering with national opens.

LIV Golf Virginia at Trump National Golf Club is scheduled to begin May 7 in Washington, D.C.
