Wake schools plans lessons around ‘America 250’

The Wake County Public School System is preparing to help students reflect on the United States’ 250th birthday.

It’s the latest of numerous planned celebrations and commemorations in North Carolina and beyond ahead of the July 4, 2026, anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The school system’s plan includes dozens of suggested activities for students, such as creating timelines, studying local figures and interviewing their elders.

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources worked with educators, historians and many others to come up with the themes for “America 250” in the state’s classrooms. Those themes are envisioning freedom, gathering voices and finding common ground.

The school system plans to present their ideas to the school board’s student achievement committee Tuesday afternoon.
