People living in Nova Scotia’s Colchester County are being told to stay inside and lock their doors as RCMP seek a man they say may be armed with a handgun.

Police issued an alert around 2:44 a.m. as they searched for two men in the community of Salmon River.

One of the men was taken into custody, but officers are still searching for a second person.

Police said the men were in the Ice Pond Drive area.

The man still being sought by police was wearing a dark grey hoodie, green or camouflage pants and a white shirt.

There are no reported injuries.

The alert was initially issued for Pictou, Cumberland, Hants and Colchester counties.

A police spokesperson said it has been lifted for Pictou, Cumberland and Hants, but remains in place in Colchester.

Residents are being told to close and lock all doors and windows, not leave their secure location and not drive in the area.
