Autopsy Delays Push Back Nick Reiner’s Murder Case

The double-murder case against Nick Reiner is moving forward without a key piece of evidence: the final autopsy reports on his parents. Reiner, 32, appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom Wednesday in a yellow jail shirt and shackles, where he agreed to waive his right to a speedy preliminary hearing, Rolling Stone reports. The judge scheduled a new hearing for Sept. 15. Prosecutors told the court they expect to turn over roughly two terabytes of evidence to the defense but said the autopsy reports for filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer-philanthropist Michele Reiner are “still not ready,” with no timeline given.

This was Reiner’s third court appearance since he was charged with killing his parents, USA Today reports. His only words during the hearing were “yeah” and “yes.” Reiner, who has been in custody without bail since his arrest, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the Dec. 14, 2025, stabbings inside the family’s Brentwood home. Both parents died from multiple sharp-force injuries, and prosecutors say a knife was used as the weapon.

In an essay on Substack last week, Nick Reiner’s older brother Jake wrote about the “living nightmare” of losing both his parents at the same time. “They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them,” he wrote. “They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world.”
