Local Roundup: Dallas baseball takes down Hazleton Area

Peyton VanValkenburgh drove in two runs as Dallas defeated Hazleton Area 3-1 Thursday, knocking the Cougars out of a first-place tie in Division 1 of Wyoming Valley Conference baseball.

VanValkenburgh finished with two of Dallas’ four hits. Brady Youngblood also had an RBI.

Dallas starter Nick Bednar went five innings, striking out eight and allowing all four of Hazleton Area’s hits. Conor Healey threw the final two innings to get the win.

Logan Hearity had a double and single for Hazleton Area, which saw its 11-game winning streak come to an end. Starter Nick Cunniffe pitched 5.2 innings and struck out 12.

Hazleton Area fell to 9-2 in the division as Pittston Area (9-1) took over sole possession of first place.

Postponements

Wilkes-Barre Area at Wyoming Valley West will be played at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Berwick at Crestwood has been moved to May 13.

Two other games weren’t immediately rescheduled — Pittston Area at Nanticoke Area and Tunkhannock at Wyoming Area.

SOFTBALL

Lake-Lehman 15, Hanover Area 0

Hannah Chipego allowed just one walk over three hitless innings and struck out six to lead the Black Knights to victory.

Kaitlyn Brudnicki and Gracie James each homered for Lake-Lehman. Julia Sholtis had two doubles, a triple and drove in three runs.

Ella Place was the only baserunner for Hanover Area, working a walk.

Postponements

Nanticoke Area at Berwick was rescheduled to May 7.

Holy Redeemer at Crestwood was moved to May 13.

BOYS TRACK

Dallas 83, Crestwood 58

The Mountaineers capped off an undefeated WVC season and clinched the Division 1 title with a win over Crestwood.

Trevor Slavinski won the 100 and 200 dashes for Dallas. Benjamin Hodne (800 run) and Chase Comiskey (1600 run) won one individual event each and both helped Dallas win the 3,200 relay.

Elijah Zeneski won the 110 and 300 hurdles for Crestwood.

Hazleton Area 66, Berwick 25

Seven different athletes won at least one individual event as Hazleton Area triumphed over Berwick in a meet shortened by rain.

Matty Burke picked up an impressive win in the 100 dash, holding off Berwick’s Ty’Meere Wilkerson by a tenth of a second. Carter Fellin won the 800 run and finished second in the 1,600 run.

Myles DiPippa won the 1,600 run and Christopher Bowman won the javelin for Berwick.

GIRLS TRACK

Crestwood 106, Dallas 44

Jordan Andrews won the long jump, the 200 dash and ran a leg on Crestwood’s 400 relay as the Comets locked up the Division 1 title with a win over Dallas.

Hayley Keiser won the 100 dash and also helped lead the Comets to a win in the 400 relay.

Brynlee Tabor won the triple jump for Dallas. Olivia Dunbar added a win in the 100 hurdles for the Mountaineers.

Hazleton Area 76, Berwick 24

The Cougars won 10 of 12 finalized events before rain washed out the rest of the meet with Berwick.

Adrianna Flintosh won the triple jump for Hazleton Area and was also part of the team’s 400 relay. Sonia Diaz won the 100 dash and also helped the Cougars win the 400 relay.

Audra Lear won the 800 run for Berwick’s only individual win of the meet, and was also part of Berwick’s win in the 3,200 relay.

BOYS LACROSSE

Souderton 14, Crestwood 7

The Comets had things tied up at halftime but couldn’t keep up with District 1 foe Souderton on Wednesday.

Gianni Piccolotti led the way for Crestwood with a hat trick.

BOYS TENNIS

Holy Redeemer 3, Hazleton Area 0

The Royals were able to grind out three victories before rain came and halted the match, ending the regular season with a win.

Frank Klimovitz and William Moller won in singles for Redeemer, and the doubles duo of Jack Antinnes and Dan Matechak added a point to clinch the match.

Hernan Arias was winning his singles match after the first set for Hazleton Area when rain halted play.
