Former Birmingham City chief financial officer Mark Smith has taken up a new position with Championship rivals Wrexham.
Smith officially left Blues last month and the club have hired Andrew Rudd as his replacement. Rudd previously worked for Manchester United as commercial finance director.
Smith worked at St Andrew’s for six-and-a-half years in total after initially joining the club in 2019 as financial controller before being promoted to chief financial officer in June 2021.

The Brummie has been a key player since Knighthead’s takeover and would advise on what the club could spend in transfer windows.
Smith was jokingly referred to as ‘Dr Doom’ by Blues chairman Tom Wagner last year for insisting that spending had to be reined in during the summer to ensure the club complied with the EFL’s stringent financial rules.
Speaking to fans at an Open House event, Wagner said: “There’s a member of staff, our CFO, and his name is Dr Doom.
“What he does is take a very conservative approach with regard to our forward financials. We spent what we could, we have a very high quality squad, and I’m very comfortable with the process of recruitment.”
Smith will now pore over Wrexham’s financials after jumping ship to the club who finished runners-up to Blues in League One last season.
Wrexham have settled into Championship life better than Blues have and could end the season in the play-offs. The Red Dragons are in a three-way battle for sixth with Hull City and Derby County going into the final day of the Championship season on Saturday.
