Angel Fierro Misses Weight, Pays $40K Ahead Of Duarte Fight

Fierro’s weight issue comes with a financial penalty. He will forfeit $40,000 from his purse to Duarte as compensation for coming in heavy, as first reported by Dan Rafael.
Duarte now finds himself in a tough spot, giving away significant weight against a pressure fighter in Fierro in what was supposed to be a light welterweight contender fight Saturday night on Amazon Prime Video PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Fierro isn’t easy to deal with at the best of times, and the added size only makes it harder.
The bout remains intact, but the size difference could become a factor once the fight begins, particularly given how far over the limit Fierro arrived. Duarte, who made weight without issue, now heads into the fight conceding both size and physical margin on fight night.
It’s one thing to give up a pound or two, but 3.4 pounds is an entire weight class of difference at this level. When you factor in the rehydration, Fierro could easily walk into that ring looking like a middleweight.
Fierro is already a heavy hitter. Carrying that extra mass means his shots will have even more impact, and Duarte’s chin is going to be tested by someone who didn’t have to suffer through those final, grueling pounds.
$40,000 is a nice chunk of change, but it won’t feel like much if Duarte is under a relentless, heavy-handed assault for twelve rounds. He’s going to have to use every bit of his mobility and keep this at range, because getting into a phone-booth battle with a hydrated welterweight is a recipe for disaster.
