Who Wants to Be a Millionaire player wastes lifeline on ‘easy’ question – could you get it

Jeremy Clarkson was back on Sunday evening for another episode of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire. As usual, the ITV gameshow saw another line-up of contestants answer just 15 questions that could change their lives – with the four lifelines Ask the Audience, Phone a Friend, 50-50 and Ask the Host available to them if they get stuck.
But early on the first contestant of the evening completely “wasted” his Ask the Host lifeline as he turned to Jeremy for help – much earlier than expected. On the £500 question, the contestant was asked: “A ballcock is commonly found inside which of these?” The available answers were A, light bulb, B, burglar alarm, C, toilet cistern or D, an electric kettle. The player looked completely unsure as his mind appeared to go blank and he declared: “I think I’m going to Ask the Host, final answer”.
Jeremy looked perplexed as he answered: “Right, here’s what I think. Slightly surprised to be brought in so early, but… right, well, there’s no point messing around.”
He then knowledgably answered the question with ease, saying: “It’s a toilet cistern. And that is my final answer.” The contestant replied: “Since you’re that 100% sure, I think I am gonna go with C – final answer.” It was indeed revealed to be correct.
The studio audience erupted into applause as Jeremy addressed them to say: “There is no need to applaud that.” He quipped: “Plumbing is my middle name.”
However, things were not looking good for the contestant, who very quickly relied on help once more. He Asked the Audience for the question: “Members of the allium family include onions, leeks, garlic and which of these herbs?”
The answers were parsley, rosemary, basil or chives. An overwhelming 95% of the audience voted for chives as the player admitted: “That was exactly what I was thinking, so I just wasted a lifeline. But I’m happy that I’ve made sure I got the right one.”
Unfortunately, the contestant didn’t make it much further, as just two questions later he was sent packing. Jeremy quipped: “I think the basic problem, Arunan, is you just don’t know very many things.”
He added: “This maybe was the wrong show for you to be on, that’s what I’m thinking. But depsite that, you are leaving with £1,000.”
