Multiple fire departments fight heavy Belleville fire. Gym destroyed

Heavy smoke was seen rising from an afternoon fire in an industrial section of Belleville on Sunday, May 3.

Police and fire officials from Belleville and Essex County did not immediately respond to inquiries about the fire. Unconfirmed reports indicate the fire broke out in a mattress warehouse around 2:45 p.m. in the area of Cortland Street. The smoke could be seen from at least as far away as Newark.

Mayor Michael Melham was also on the scene at 4 p.m., posting video of the fire response on Facebook. A Northjersey.com photographer was also at the scene.

The Belleville Recreation Department also took to social media to announce that Legacy Boxing had “been affected by the fire.”

“Legacy Boxing has been an important part of our recreation family, providing opportunities, mentorship, and a positive outlet for so many in our community. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted during this difficult time,” they wrote.

No injuries have been reported.
