M5 closed by fuel spill after tanker crash

A “significant diesel spillage” following a crash on the M5 has caused three lanes of the motorway to be closed.

The southbound motorway has been shut between junction 22 near Burnham-on-Sea and junction 23 near Bridgwater in Somerset after a crash between a car and fuel tanker at around 04:30 BST.

Avon and Somerset Police said it was not believed anyone had been seriously injured in the crash.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service added: “Thankfully, there were no casualties but there was some fuel spillage from the tanker which is currently being cleared up.”
