Katy Perry’s Mask at the Met Gala Actually Holds a Symbolic Meaning

THE RUNDOWN
- Katy Perry is at the Met Gala this evening, where she posed with Connor Storrie while wearing a mask on the red carpet.
- She later unveiled her face while posing for photos in her white Stella McCartney gown.
- This is her first time back since 2022.
Katy Perry is back on the Met Gala red carpet for the first time since 2022. The singer stepped out on her own to celebrate the museum’s “Costume Art” exhibit this evening. Perry arrived wearing a white mask, posing with Connor Storrie in it. (He joined in and hid his face, too.) The headpiece, made by Miodrag Guberinic, matched her custom Stella McCartney look.

There were multiple layers to Perry’s unorthodox ensemble. First, she poked fun at the AI images of her attending previous Met Galas by getting in on the joke. Her glove this evening had a sixth finger, referencing a common mistake in AI designs, and she teamed up with an artist (@sailkatycat) to create exclusive renderings of her look on the carpet before she arrived at the event.
As for the mask, it was “designed to be a literal and symbolic reflection that invites the observer to consider that their perception of others can mirror their own internal world, and conversely mask truth,” according to a press release.
As Perry walked up the steps, she pulled a Magician tarot card and then opened her mask on the red carpet.

Meanwhile, her dress was crafted from Italian deadstock duchess satin, repurposed from surplus tailoring fabrics, which means no new materials were used to make it.
Finally, the burned details on Perry’s train seem to tease her next single, “Watch It Burn.”

When Perry last attended the New York City event four years ago, she wore a dramatic high-low Oscar de la Renta dress. “I feel great,” she told Vogue in a red carpet interview that evening. “I mean it’s not my first rodeo, so I feel like I can relax. You know, last time I came to the Met, I was a cheeseburger. I loved it, and I was like, ‘What am I going to do tonight?’ I’m going to play a whole different card and now I feel like I’m just accepting the darling darkness.”

Last year, Perry couldn’t attend the Met Gala because she was on The Lifetimes Tour. She debunked AI images of herself at the event going around, writing on Instagram, “Couldn’t make it to the MET, I’m on The Lifetimes Tour (see you in Houston tomorrow IRL‼️) P.S. this year I was actually with my mom so she’s safe from the bots [and being fooled by them] but I’m praying for the rest of y’all.”
In January 2025, she spoke about her intentions for the tour, telling Variety, “I’m definitely pushing the boundaries with these concerts. I’m always pushing my team to develop something that’s not to help me develop something that’s never been seen or heard.”
“I also feel the responsibility to give my audience the songs that they know,” she continued. “I’m there to let them tap into the nostalgia… I really just want to reconnect. I want to lock eyes with my fans. It’s been a minute, and I feel very full up on love. I’m overflowing with it.”
