Parker Kelly faces a Department of Player Safety hearing after throwing punches at Matt Boldy and connecting with a linesman in the Avalanche-Wild series.

The clip surfaced on social media and lit up hockey Twitter within minutes. Officials don’t get hit. Not on accident. Not on purpose.

Punching a referee or linesman, even unintentionally, has historically triggered automatic supplemental discipline. The league rarely waits for context.

For Colorado, that’s a depth problem at the worst possible time. The Wild and Avalanche are tied in the second round after Sunday’s wild 9-6 Colorado win in Game 1.

Kelly is having a real season. The 26-year-old put up 21 goals and 35 points in 82 games for the Avalanche while playing on a $825,000 cap hit.

Bottom-six gold. Penalty kill minutes. A shorthanded goal during the year. That’s the kind of player Jared Bednar leans on when games tighten up.

The eye-test sequence in the clip is brutal. A scrum, gloves up, Kelly throwing right hands toward Boldy and the official caught between them as bodies collapse.

Minnesota will counter hard. Boldy isn’t a fringe target. He’s a top-line winger and the Wild will frame any contact with him as an attempt to injure when they file their side.

The league office sees that footage too.

Player Safety calls the contact with the linesman first, the punches at Boldy second, and the optics of a playoff series third.

Game 3 lands in St. Paul on Saturday.

Bednar will know the verdict before then. Whether he has 12 forwards or 11 will define how Colorado handles back-to-back road games in a 1-1 series.
