This year’s rally, which attracted a record entry of 170 teams, began with a “shakedown” session in the north of the island on Thursday evening.
Due to be run over 22 special stages, held on closed roads across the island, the competitive action began shortly after 09:00 BST on Friday.
The statement said: “Motorsport UK and the organising team extend their sincere condolences to the family, friends and the wider rallying community at this difficult time.”
