Federal judge denies Alabama’s emergency redistricting request

A few hours after the emergency order was filed, a United States District Judge has denied Alabama’s request to redistrict their legislative map before an upcoming election.

The emergency request was filed by Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen after controversial rulings at the courthouse. The legislative map stays the same for now, but Allen is expected to appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Special Session ended today in Montgomery after bills were passed to create a special primary election. Alabama lawmakers were spurred into this session after SCOTUS ruled to change part of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais.

The special election would only happen if the court lifts the injunction that forces Alabama to use the same districting maps until 2030.
