The multi-vehicle collision occurred between junction 12, Eccles Interchange, and 11, Birchwood on the westbound carriageway.
Firefighters and paramedics are in attendance at the scene while the incident is ongoing.

All traffic is now being held on both the westbound and eastbound carriageways.
There are currently delays of around 45 minutes.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police has confirmed that officers were called to the scene.
A man has since been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence.
