Nationwide Chocolate Recall Expanded Amid Salmonella Fears

A nationwide recall of Spring & Mulberry chocolate bars has just been expanded, with more products now flagged due to a potential risk of salmonella contamination—prompting a fresh new warning to shoppers.
While the company initially recalled a limited number of products earlier this year, a detailed root-cause analysis prompted it to widen the scope to include additional products. Numerous food recalls have been initiated nationally over the past year due to potential contamination, foodborne illnesses, or undeclared allergens.
Newsweek has contacted Spring & Mulberry for comment via email.
What to Know
The recall involves multiple Spring & Mulberry chocolate bar products sold nationwide through online sales and select retail partners, according to a company announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday.
Spring & Mulberry said the products are being recalled due to the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, a bacterium that can cause foodborne illness.
Following a root‑cause investigation carried out with manufacturing partners, food safety experts, and the FDA, the company identified a single lot of date ingredient used in production as the most likely source of contamination. In response, the company expanded the recall to include all finished products made using that ingredient lot.
“Spring & Mulberry takes the safety and quality of its products extremely seriously,” a company spokesperson said in a press release.
Company officials said all finished chocolate bars included in the expanded recall have tested negative for salmonella, and that there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the products to date.
Why This Recall Matters
If you’ve bought Spring & Mulberry chocolate bars recently, especially from national retailers or online platforms, it’s worth double-checking your packaging immediately. The FDA warns contaminated food can often look and smell normal, so it’s urging consumers to take this recall seriously and avoid eating any products that may be affected.
Which Chocolate Bars Are Affected By The Recall?
The affected chocolate bars were available for purchase nationwide beginning in August 2025.
A wide range of flavors is included in the recall, including Blood Orange, Coffee, Earl Grey, Lavender Rose, Mango Chili, Mint Leaf, Mixed Berry, Mulberry Fennel, Pecan Date, Pure Dark, Pure Dark Mini, and Sea Salt.
Each product can be identified using a combination of:
- Flavor name
- Lot or batch code
- Box color
The lot code appears on the back of the packaging and the inner wrapper, according to the company.
Newsweek has included a full list of impacted products at the end of this article.
Where the Recalled Chocolate Was Sold
According to the FDA notice, the recalled Spring & Mulberry chocolate bars were distributed nationwide, meaning they were not limited to a specific region or state. The products were available for purchase online as well as through select retail partners across the country. As the affected chocolate bars have been on sale since at least August 2025, there is an increased likelihood that some consumers may still have them at home.
What Is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a group of bacteria that can cause a foodborne illness known as salmonellosis.
The infection typically affects the digestive system and is one of the most common causes of food poisoning in the United States. People usually become infected by eating contaminated food, particularly raw or undercooked items, in this case one of the core ingredients used in the production of the chocolate bars.
Symptoms of a salmonella infection usually begin between 12 and 72 hours after the consumption of a contaminated product, and any illness typically lasts four to seven days. Most people recover without needing any medical treatment.
Why Salmonella Is a Concern—Who Is Most at Risk?
According to the company’s FDA‑posted notice, infection can be serious and sometimes fatal in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
Healthy individuals may experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, while in rare cases the infection can lead to more severe illness.
What Customers Should Do
Consumers who purchased any affected chocolate bars are advised not to consume them.
To obtain a refund, customers should photograph the packaging with the batch code, email it to the company, and then dispose of the product.
