African Countries Mark WWII Victory Anniversary with Tree Planting Campaign

(MENAFN) Several countries across Africa have held commemorative events marking the 81st anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, with participation from diplomats, local residents, students, and members of Russian communities, ahead of Russia’s annual Victory Day observances on May 9.
In Guinea, the Russian Embassy in Conakry took part in the “Garden of Memory” initiative by planting trees and shrubs on embassy grounds. The ceremony included school students and embassy staff, who contributed to planting vegetation dedicated to Soviet soldiers who died during World War II.
Russian Ambassador to Guinea Aleksey Popov described the memorial project as a long-term effort aimed at preserving remembrance of past generations’ wartime sacrifices and establishing a lasting commemorative tradition.
The broader “Garden of Memory” campaign, launched in 2020 under the initiative of Russian leadership, aims to plant millions of trees globally, symbolically representing each Soviet citizen who died during the Second World War.
Similar activities were also reported in Mozambique, where embassy staff, students, and members of the Russian diaspora planted fruit tree saplings as part of the initiative.
In Mauritania, the campaign was implemented for the first time this year, with Russian nationals in Nouakchott planting trees on embassy grounds. Russian cultural and cooperation organizations noted that the initiative also aligns with environmental goals in the region, including efforts to combat desertification and improve local ecological conditions.
The commemorations reflect the continued international reach of Victory Day-related remembrance activities, combining historical commemoration with environmental and cultural initiatives across participating countries.
